Cheryl R. Holland, CFP® « | What is the CFP® certification? «
President

Cheryl graduated cum laude from Bryn Mawr College in 1980 with an A.B. in Economics and received her CFP® certification in 1990.

Her recognition as a financial advisor is far-reaching. Worth magazine has selected Cheryl as one of its Top Financial Advisors three times. She has been recognized for four years by Medical Economics as among the “150 Best Financial Advisors for Doctors.” Bloomberg Wealth Manager twice included her in its annual survey of the top wealth managers in the nation. In addition, she has been widely quoted in Forbes, Money, Worth, Financial Planning, Journal of Financial Planning, Medical Economics, Investment Advisor, Kiplinger’s, Bloomberg Wealth Management, and other national financial publications.

Cheryl is a member of the Bryn Mawr College Board of Trustees, serving as the chair of the Investment Committee for the Endowment. She is an appointed member of the 2006-2007 Schwab Institutional Advisory Board, the Schwab Institutional Technology and Operations Advisory Board, and the 2007-2008 TIAA-CREF Board of Financial Advisors. Locally, she is a member of the Clemson University College of Business and Behavioral Science Advisory Board and an Elder at Shandon Presbyterian Church.

Client Focus: Providing the big picture perspective – matching investment and financial planning strategies to a client’s goals and spearheading the Abacus commitment to problem solving.

Life Focus: Relishing her family (particularly her role as a mother to a delightful daughter), cooking, camping and reading voraciously.

The Investment Team

X. Alexandra Chastain, CFP® « | What is the CFP® certification? «

X. Alexandra Chastain has been with Abacus Planning Group, Inc. from the beginning and has spent most of that time working with the firm’s Investment team. Alex has significant experience in investment due diligence and research, asset allocation planning and portfolio design and implementation. Alex received her CFP® certification in 2004 and has gained a broad perspective of the role of investment management in relation to clients’ comprehensive financial planning goals.

Alex graduated from The University of South Carolina in 1997 with a B.S. in Business Administration and Finance.

Client Focus: Investor education; investment research and evaluation; mutual fund/equity trade execution; supervision of the generation of performance reports.

Life Focus: Outside work, Alex enjoys spending time with her husband, Jason and their son, Tanner. She is also an avid tennis player and is actively involved in USTA Competitive Leagues.


Charles Flowers «

Charles, recognized for his research and analytical abilities, is a 2001 graduate of The University of the South (Sewanee) with a B.A. in Economics. He has recently begun the Chartered Financial Analyst program.

Client Focus: Investment research and portfolio assessments; the execution and monitoring of all trading activity for the firm.

Life Focus: Taking in the great outdoors – running, hunting and fishing.


 

Angel T. Marvin, CPA «

Angel T. Marvin graduated from the University of South Carolina with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1993 and a Master of Taxation in 2002. She is a Certified Public Accountant in both North and South Carolina. Her professional memberships include the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the South Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants.

Prior to joining Abacus, Angel was a tax manager in the Federal Business Tax Group at Grant Thornton, LLP, working with real estate development, health care, manufacturing and professional service companies.

Client Focus: Working directly with clients to implement their financial planning decisions particularly in relation to income tax issues.

Life Focus: Away from work, Angel enjoys outdoor activities with her young son and watching all sports, particularly college football.


S. Bart Valley, CFA « | What is the CFA designation? «

Bart, deeply experienced in investment research and planning, graduated from Cornell University in 1994 with a B.A. in Economics. In 2003 he earned the prestigious Chartered Financial Analyst Designation which is the only globally recognized credential for investment analysis and management.

Client Focus: Advising on asset allocation decisions, investment policy formulation, portfolio design, and investment implementation.

Life Focus: Seeing the world – traveling and backpacking.

The Financial Planning Team


Arianna Sims Derrick, CFP® « | What is the CFP® certification? «

Arianna received a MAT in Health Education and a BS in Mathematics Education from the University of South Carolina, and recently received her CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification in 2007. She has served as a math instructor at Midlands Technical College, the Director of Orientation at the College of Charleston, the Principal of Hand Middle School, and Assistant Principal of Dreher High School. She is a 1985 graduate of the Leadership Columbia Program.

Client Focus: Working directly with clients to implement their financial planning decisions.

Life Focus: Keeping up with her wonderful daughter, family, friends, reading, and practicing yoga.


Andrew Jones «

Andrew, a 2006 graduate of Clemson University with a BS in Financial Management, is currently pursuing CFP® certification. He joined the Abacus financial planning team as a paraplanner in his pursuit of the three year practical experience requirement for CFP® certification. Andrew, a native South Carolinan, grew up in Beaufort.

Client Focus: Assisting the financial planning team in the implementation of the clients’ financial plan.

Life Focus: Playing golf, fishing, and traveling.



Eddie Kramer, CFP® « | What is the CFP® certification? «

Eddie W. Kramer serves as a paraplanner on the financial planning team of Abacus Planning Group, Inc. In this capacity, he works closely with clients to understand their goals in order to develop and implement a comprehensive financial plan to achieve those goals. Eddie received the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification in 2006.

Prior to joining Abacus, Eddie attended Texas Tech University where he graduated with a B.S. in Personal Financial Planning in May 2004. During his college years, he worked as a Peer Financial Educator for a non-profit organization, Red to Black. This non-profit organization gave financial advice to Texas Tech students and faculty.

Eddie and his wife, Keva, moved from Fredericksburg, TX, to Columbia, SC, to join Abacus in August 2004.

Client Focus: Working directly with clients to implement their financial planning decisions.

Life Focus: When not at work, Eddie enjoys reading as well as a variety of outdoor activities such as hunting, canoeing, and backpacking.


Susan Amick McCants, CFP® « | What is the CFP® certification? «

Susan, a 1980 graduate of Erskine College with a B.S. in Economics and Management, came to Abacus with a fifteen-year track record in the banking industry. She was Vice President and Certified Cash Manager in the Treasury Services Division at First Union National Bank in Boca Raton, Florida.

Client Focus: Working directly with clients to implement their financial planning decisions.

Life Focus: Volunteering at her children’s school, reading and traveling.

 

Jonathan J. Robertson «

Jonathan J. Robertson is a 2004 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Texas Tech University with a B.S. in Personal Financial Planning. While at Texas Tech, Jon was a peer financial educator with Red to Black, a non-profit organization at the college. After graduating from Texas Tech, Jon earned his Juris Doctor from University of South Carolina School of Law in May of 2007 and sat for the South Carolina bar in July of 2007.

Client Focus: Working directly with clients to implement their financial planning decisions particularly in relation to estate planning issues as well as being responsible for many of the back office operational issues.

Life Focus: In his free time, Jon enjoys playing with his two dogs, running, cooking, and camping.

Barbara S. Griffin «

Barbara is a 1969 graduate of Salem College with a B.A. in English and Sociology. She heads the firm’s public relations initiative, with a clear objective to maintain and expand Abacus’ role as an outstanding corporate citizen.

Client Focus: For starters, introducing Abacus to new clients, followed by oversight of day-to-day service details – aiming for 100% client satisfaction.

Life Focus: Family, friends, reading (suggestions welcome), and travel.


Clydia L. Nations «

Clydia is a graduate of King’s College with an Associates Degree in Secretarial Science.

Client Focus: Keeping the inner-workings of Abacus running smoothly so total attention can be turned to serving clients smoothly.

Life Focus: Youth counselor at her church, reading and sailing.



Molly Alford Thomas «

Molly is a 1981 graduate of The College of Charleston with a B.S. in Education. Before joining Abacus, Molly worked in marketing and management.

Client Focus: Working quietly behind the scenes to ensure a pleasant experience for the Abacus clients, Molly seamlessly coordinates the details: organizing travel, planning events and managing many of the daily tasks that are required to keep the office and the employees on an even keel.

Life Focus: Family, Friends and of course, Fun.
