The South Carolina Psychological Association in conjunction with the American Psychological Association presented the 2005 Psychologically Healthy Workplace Awards on April 22, 2005. Five South Carolina companies/organizations were recognized for demonstrating a commitment to the psychological health and well-being of their employees. Winners included both for-profit and not-for-profit companies/organizations and were grouped according to the size of the company with awards going to large, medium, small and very small (less than 100 employees) companies.
Abacus Planning Group, Inc., won for the very small for-profit category. At Abacus every employee receives significant support. Employees are required to take a four-week sabbatical every five years, having no contact with the office and reflecting on their career and that choice as it relates to their lives. The company strives to be family friendly, allows employees to bring their children to the office on early dismissal days and encourages taking time off to volunteer at their children's schools. Flex time is available to care for aging parents or young children.
